Mouhamed, a nickname, is a Senegalese asylum seeker in New York who arrived in 2023 and lived in a Brooklyn shelter until December 2024.
He has a wife and one son in Senegal. His son had not yet been born when Mouhamed arrived in the United States.
While waiting for employment authorization, he sold goods on the street alongside other Senegalese migrants and sought advice from those who had already found work. He later secured a formal job at a franchise restaurant but said he was fired, reflecting the instability that can continue even after migrants leave the shelter system. Through shared meals, home gatherings where fellow Senegalese migrants play soccer video games, and religious events, Mouhamed remains part of a close Senegalese community in Harlem and the Bronx.
